London - Sony Ericsson has taken an audacious leap in luxury phone segment by releasing Xperia Pureness, a phone that "strips away the unnecessary in both form and function" but ranks high on oomph factor.

Pureness claims to the world's first handset with a transparent liquid crystal LCD screen but if you're looking for cutting-edge technology under its hood, you may be left disappointed. Why? Because Pureness does away with technology clutter as it is not powered by any mobile processor, does not run on mobile OS and does not come with any onboard camera, touchscreen, WiFi, GPS, MicroSD card slot or MicroUSB port. Rather, it presents itself "a simple design phone" which brings together beautiful craftsmanship and the concept of "talk, text, time - a holiday from technology."

According to Sony Ericsson, Pureness "approaches the mobile phone as a work of art rather than technology. The company's designers aimed to sculpt an object of design that reflected the purity of water and a sense of calmness when not in use."

No wonder, because Pureness boasts of an 1.8-inch TFT transparent scratch-resistant monochrome(!) display which becomes opaque when the phone is in "off" mode.

Sony Ericsson has also indulgently included some ambient light functions in Pureness that makes it an object of desire. For instance, Pureness keys are concealed and only illuminate when touched. Call and message notification in Pureness are also accompanied with a subtle illumination.

But that's not all. Pureness, which is available only in black colour, measures 102x43x13mm (it is shaped as a candy bar), weighs 70gm and includes features Bluetooth, modem and web browser (with Java and Flash support) and though it does not boast of being a messaging device like Blackberry phones, yet, it offers some pretty smart messaging options such as email, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, SMS and MMS.

The networking features of Pureness include GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, 3G and HSPA while its battery boasts of enough juice to keep the phone powered up to 350 hours of standby time and 8.5 hours of talk time.

However, it is in the entertainment department Pureness excels as it is not only a smart-looking device but also it can transform itself into a music phone when you want to let your hair loose as it boasts of features such as FM Radio, Album Art (a feature that allows you to choose music by browsing CD album arts or other images), TrackID (a feature that allows you to record a few seconds of a song and get track, artist and album information sent to your phone in seconds) and Mega Bass (enhanced bass frequencies in Pureness give your music more body).

Pureness also has an onboard media player that supports multiple audio and video playback formats, Bluetooth stereo (A2DP) (that wirelessly streams music from the phone to your headset) and supports music tones in MP3 and AAC formats (which enables you to use original artist recordings as ring tones).

However, what really distinguishes Pureness from other Sony Ericsson devices is perhaps the personalised services the handset comes with. For instance, Pureness users are offered services such as Xperia services (with your Xperia Pureness, you get a tailor-made service package. From the support panel in the phone, you can choose to contact Sony Ericsson's dedicated Xperia services support team or go straight to their web support. And in the unlikely event your Xperia Pureness stops functioning while abroad, the company will give you a replacement phone within 48 hours in most areas) and Pureness concierge (it is a 24 hour a day concierge service with a presence in cities around the world from Dubai to Paris, Moscow to Hong Kong - wherever your travels may take you. The concierge team is only a call or email away, always ready to help you make the most of your precious time by booking you into the best restaurants, health clubs, concerts, plays, events, nightclubs, etc).
